The side detection system is a modern supervisory system that uses ultrasonic technology.This system is specifically designed for lorries and light commercials to warn the driver and pedestrians or cyclists of the dangers of the turning vehicle.When the vehicle slows to approximately 10Mph,the side detection system checks the area on the nearside of the vehicle.If there are any obstacles,pedestrians or cyclists,the system warns the driver internally,with a visual warning and then finally with an audible tone through the display/buzzer.Once below 10Mph and if the vehicle is turning left and the left indicator is switched on,the system will give one announcement,via an external voice speaker,"Warning,vehicle turning left".If detection is within 600mm of the vehicle,the external warning message will be repeated for the duration that there is detection.The system is designed to offer assistance whilst turning left and the driver should still use caution when turning.To further assist the driver,there is an output that switches with the indicator to control an external side camera.This can be integrated with an existing camera system or can be added separately.

The function principle is based upon the ultrasonic echo-transit time method.Each of the 4 sensors will emit a steady intermitting ultrasonic signal.The sensors operate as both transmitters and receivers,which will receive the beamed and reflected ultrasonic signals from possible obstacles.The distance from the obstacles is evaluated through the transit time of the evaluated signals and is indicated by the sequence of pulsed flashes of the LED display until the final zone,where a constant tone from the inbuilt piezo buzzer will be heard.The nearer to the obstacle the vehicle becomes,the faster the sequence of lights,and finally tone from the buzzer.The external speaker siren offers a single warning when the vehicle is below 10Mph and the left indicator is switched on.Repeated messages are only offered when external detection is within 600mm.

Activation is indicated by a single flash of the green LED on the display.This occurs when the vehicle’s speed falls below 10Mph or if the vehicle is stationary and the handbrake is released.Deactivation is indicated by a double flash of the green LED on the display.This occurs when the handbrake is applied or when the vehicle’s speed rises above 10Mph.
